Skin solutions: Anti Ageing

One of the most popular treatments and concerns I get asked about is anti ageing and age prevention. However it is important that we understand the difference and some fundamental things we can do to help with this long term.

The facts

Our skin starts to age from around 25 years old, which is a gradual process that typically begins when the body starts to produce less collagen and skin cell renewal slows down. The first visible signs of aging are usually fine lines and a loss of moisture. As the skin ages, it can become less firm and elastic, leading to deeper wrinkles, sagging, and loss of volume in certain areas.

As people age, their faces undergo many changes, including deflation, deterioration, and descent. These changes can cause the face to appear hollow or sunken, or it can droop and develop fat bulges.

Other changes that can occur are:
- Skin can become thinner, paler, and more translucent.
- It can also lose its strength and elasticity due to changes in connective tissue. As people age, their skin may also produce less collagen and elastin.
- The skin's ability to retain moisture may also decrease, and it may shed dead skin cells more slowly.

Our body naturally produces both collagen and hyaluronic acid that play a huge part in being responsible for firmness, hydration and the skin looking plump and tighter. As we age however we lose on average 30% per day of these crucial body identical ingredients,  so it is really important that we replace them.

My analogy

My analogy of this is like a grape and a raisin - both are the same however a grape is hydrated from within therefore looks nice and smooth, plump and juicy. A raisin however is dehydrated and therefore looks wrinkly, shrivelled with an uneven surface. This is why when clients often come to me for what they think they need, eg botox, its usually a deep hydration face treatment they actually need and to start using a good home care range with a simple routine.

Remember be patient, our skin works on a 28 day turnover and regeneration of skin cells cycle.

Lesleys top tips

Invest in quality products that contain active ingredients (see my blog on Hyaluronic acids) and stick to a routine, remember continuity is key, allow products time to work.

In salon treatments such as my Skinstorm facial are excellent, this works in so many ways to help remove dead skin cells, deeply hydrate the skin from within and also stimulate new collagen and elastin.
For an extra boost of hydration - drink Revival shots!

Avoid dehydrating products (unless your skin is excessively oily) such as toners, micellar water etc. These are taking out natural moisture and hydration from the skin.

Discuss long term goals and plan with your skin specialist, small steps are a great way of introducing things gradually. Injectables such as skin boosters, dermal fillers and botox and great additions to help with anti ageing, however having healthy skin should always be your priority.
