Skin solutions: Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that happens when hair follicles under the skin become clogged.

Sebum—oil that helps keep skin from drying out—and dead skin cells plug the pores, which leads to outbreaks of lesions, commonly called pimples or spots. Most often, the outbreaks occur on the face but can also appear on the back, chest, and shoulders.

These can often cause inflammation, become sore and can also affect mental health.

The following factors may increase your risk for developing acne:

Family history

Researchers believe that you may be more likely to get acne if your parents had acne.

Medications

Certain medications, such as medications that contain hormones, corticosteroids, and lithium, can cause acne. Check with your GP if you take contraceptive pills that you are on the correct one.

Hormones

An increase in androgens, the male sex hormones, may lead to acne. These increase in both boys and girls normally during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. Hormonal changes related to pregnancy can also cause acne.

Age

People of all ages can get acne, but it is more common amongst teenagers.

My tips to help

Follow a healthy, clean diet. Avoid ready meals and preservatives. Certain foods can trigger acne such as white bread, white rice, carbonated drinks and sugar, so be mindful of this.

Killing bacteria on the skin is crucial, invest in a good cleanser such as Crystal Clear’s Deep Clean Gel and cleanse thoroughly morning and night.

DO NOT pick! This will create more bacteria by touching the area and potentially cause scarring – invest in some spot stickers, they are great to prevent you picking.

I am so passionate about helping to solve Acne with my experience of correct in-salon treatments, and a strict home care programme. My clients have seen real results without the harmful side and long term effects, that prescription medicines can cause.
