What is pigmentation?

Also referred to as hyperpigmentation, Skin pigmentation refers to the colour of your skin. It's determined by the amount and type of melanin, a pigment made by specialised skin cells known as melanocytes. Changes in melanin production can cause pigment disorders, such as hyperpigmentation (dark spots), hypopigmentation (light spots), depigmentation (white spots or patches).

Skin damage from sun exposure, genetic factors, and autoimmune conditions are all possible causes for changes in melanin and, thus, skin pigmentation.

Which treatments will work on an uneven skin tone?

Besides topical products, certain treatments such as microdermabrasion, microneedling and Dermalux LED therapy can help to combat hyperpigmentation.

They can be highly effective in achieving long-term results. LED therapy uses different wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin and stimulate cellular activity, regulate melanin production, reduce hyperpigmentation and promoting a more even skin tone over time. LED treatments are generally safe, non-invasive and suitable for various skin types too. The new Microdermabrasion handset of the Skinstorm facial, gently lifts, removes dead skin cells and eliminates unwanted melanin that rises to the skins surface. When used in conjunction with the microneedling part of this treatment it is a really effective way of improving and reducing the skins damaged hyperpigmentation.
